Safe Storage of Gasoline at Home

We use gasoline not just for cars but for generators and gardening equipment as well. It is no surprise then that we keep our own gasoline supply at home. Having reserves of this fuel is also very useful during power shortage and other emergencies. However, storing gasoline, if not done properly, poses several dangers for you and your family. Gasoline is a highly volatile liquid and under the right conditions, it could suddenly explode and cause damage to your property or even cause death.

When storing gas, it is vital to use the proper containers. Milk jugs, glass jars, and ordinary cans will not do. You must use Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or Factory Mutual (FM) approved safety cans. These cans have been subjected to rigorous testing to ensure that they can prevent gas from accidentally leaking or exploding. Since gas expands and contracts with temperature changes, do not fill your can to the brim. Leave some space for the fuel to expand into.

Gasoline must never be kept inside the house. If you have an outdoor shed, it is best to keep it there. Make sure that the shed is well-ventilated and free from electrical equipment or other materials that could ignite a flame. If you do not have an outdoor shed, however, keep your gas canister in a cabinet outside of the home. Metal cabinets are highly advisable. It is even better if you have the cabinet padlocked so that children will not have access to your gasoline cans. Finally, always have presence of mind when using gasoline. Refrain from smoking near it and always remember to close its container tightly.
